Learning to Walk | Are You Trying to Earn God's Love?
From the Called to Love Podcast with James Levisee and Brian Knoedl
Why Relationships Are Central to Our Faith
Following Jesus was never meant to be a solo journey. In this episode of the Called to Love Podcast, James and Brian share how God uses relationships to shape us, why church hurt is so common, and how walking with others leads to spiritual maturity and growth.
Faith Was Always About People
Prayer and intimacy with God are essential, but He always points us outward. To follow Jesus is to feed His sheep, walk with His people, and live in community. Without healthy relationships, faith becomes shallow and self-centered.
Why Church Hurt Happens
The reality is simple: if you’re in church long enough, you will get hurt. Churches are filled with imperfect people on their own journeys. Expecting perfection only leads to disappointment. Instead, God calls us to respond with mercy, grace, and love that looks like Jesus.
The Role of the Mature Believer
If you’re farther along in your faith, your role is to walk with those who are searching, struggling, or new to the journey. Real discipleship means being intentional—inviting someone to coffee, listening to their story, praying with them, and encouraging them along the way.
How God Speaks Through Others
Many times, the encouragement and wisdom we need comes directly from other believers. As we walk in relationship, the Holy Spirit uses conversations, testimonies, and even challenges to grow us. What feels like helping someone else often becomes the very thing that transforms us.
Moving Beyond Sunday
Church services are important, but they’re not the whole picture. Real growth happens throughout the week—in homes, workplaces, and daily life. Meeting intentionally with other believers keeps faith alive and practical.
Steps Toward Deeper Relationships
- Be intentional: Move past the “Sunday wave” and invite someone to coffee or lunch.
- Offer support: Let people know you’re available to walk with them in their faith journey.
- Expect imperfection: Remember, church is a family—messy but transformative.
- Listen and learn: God often uses others to reveal His heart to us.
- Trust the Spirit: Be sensitive to who God highlights for you to encourage.
Until next time, may you find peace and love—and always remember: you are called to love.
