What's Church got to do with it?
From the Called to Love Podcast with James Levisee and Brian Knoedl
Moving Beyond Hurt and Empty Routine in Your Faith
Many believers walk into church hoping for change, only to find themselves caught in routines that don’t bring growth. Some carry deep hurt, while others simply don’t know how to take the next step. This episode of the Called to Love Podcast explores how to break through hurt, hear God’s voice, and walk in authentic discipleship.
The Weight of Spiritual Hurt
For many, just walking back into a church after years away takes bold courage. They arrive carrying brokenness—addictions, divorce, grief, or deep disappointment—hoping for real relationships. Sadly, church culture can sometimes feel like a performance, leaving those people on the margins instead of welcoming them into transformation.
When Faith Feels Like a Cycle
Some attend services faithfully, but outside church they live no differently than the world around them. Sunday becomes a place to repent or to feel temporary relief, but then old patterns return. Without discipleship and growth, the cycle repeats, leaving people wondering, “Is this really all there is?”
Faith Is More Than a Moment
Profession of faith at an altar call is powerful—but it’s only the beginning. If salvation becomes just a ritual, believers miss the mission Jesus gave: to grow, to reflect His love, and to influence others toward Him. The journey isn’t about sitting and waiting; it’s about transformation and action.
Finding Growth in Relationship
Real growth requires walking with others. Big groups often feel impersonal, but one-on-one or small “two-man” groups foster accountability and intimacy. Growth comes when we confess struggles, pray together, and let God’s Word reshape our mindsets. That’s where lasting change takes root.
Learning to Hear God’s Voice
Many believers wrestle with constant negative thoughts, unsure if they can ever hear from God. But just as sheep know their shepherd’s voice, we can learn to recognize God’s leading by spending time with Him. The more we draw near, the more His voice becomes familiar—clearer than the noise of doubt or distraction.
Living With Intentionality
Growth in Christ shifts our perspective. Instead of wondering if church will “be worth it,” we come expectant, asking God who He wants us to encourage, pray for, or invite into friendship. This is what it means to live as the hands and feet of Jesus—constantly connecting, encouraging, and pointing people back to Him.
Taking the Next Step
- Address church hurt: Don’t let past wounds define your future. Healing begins with openness and forgiveness.
- Go deeper than routine: Faith is more than attendance; it’s transformation through daily relationship with God.
- Seek small discipleship groups: Pair up with a mentor or peer for accountability and growth.
- Practice listening prayer: Set aside time to recognize God’s voice above the noise.
- Live missionally: Enter every church gathering asking, “Lord, who do you want me to encourage today?”
Until next time, may you find peace and love—and always remember: you are called to love.
